Alclad II and Primers
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 21, 2003 7:15 PM
Hey Folks,

Ok, so I've decided to go the Alclad route but I still have an additional question.

For those of you who have used Alclad, is it imperative that you use the suggested Tamiya or Auto primers? Would Floquil primer work as well? Does the primer need to be either a lacquer or acrylic base?

Thanks for the help

I recently finished a CF-100 with Alcad ll Aluminum. I used Model Master Light Grey (FS 36495) as a primer and it worked fine. No special prep either. I shot the grey and let it dry for 48 hours (due to circumstances beyond my control) and then shot the Alcad and let it cure for 24 hrs before spraying a second coat. After another 24 hrs it was completely cured. I was able to tape (Tamiya orange) for painting wing tank and cockpit anti-glare panels and de-icing boots without any problems.

I've not used Floquil paints so I can't address whether or not it would work as a primer for Alclad. I put down a coat of Testors light gray, usually FS 36270, and if I shooting Alclad aluminium, a coat of gloss black. For any other shade of Alclad, I put down a coat of gloss gray on top of the FS 36270. Murph's drying times correspond with mine (see above). What I like about Alclad is that you can mask over it without any adverse side effects. I'e used just about everything as a masking agent, from 3M Magic Transparent tape to Parafilm, without any problems.

I have used several things as a primer for Alclad. INcluding Testors Acryl gloss black; Testors Enamal gloss black; Tamiya Acrylic gloss black; with the same results... Works Greats!

I have written some notes about it on my Modeling site here...

I think this stuff is great... and am looking forward to an expanded line of Alclad! Smile [:)]
