I prefer a gloss finish to apply the wash to.

LOL... Normie, I think it all depends on what you want to achieve, after all!

I'll put a wash down on a 'gloss' surface. I find the wash runs all over better on a gloss surface. So between djmodels1999 and myself we've probably confused the heck out of you. Try a wash on a flat surface and a gloss surface and see what results you get and decide for yourself what you like the best.

I only do it on a flat surface. The flat (matt) surface microscopic irregularities 'keep' a bit of the wash and tend to darken the whole color scheme. On a glossy surface, I would not do a wash per se, but rather apply selectively, precisely, minute amount of a diluted paint into the recesses (like the one you'd have between the wing and the door on a car body). In effect, this is applying a wash too. But when I apply a 'real' wash, on a tank for instance, I slap the thinned down paint everywhere!

What is the best surface to apply a wash to? Matte, satin or glossy? I have heard modelers mention all three! What mix of wash would you apply to an acrylic surface versus say an enamel surface? What about a lacquer surface like Floquil railroad paint? Should you put on a clear coat first?
