Blown up/Burnt out battle tank hulls.

Hiya,

I'm inquiring about techniques to create a burnt metal effect. I've seen great dioramas with destroyed tanks, but can't seem to find any info on how it was done. So, if any of you could enlighten me on how to achieve the bleach white, twisted, burnt metal, charred black remains of a perfectly hit battle tank hull. Then I would be forever thankful.
I think I remember reading somewhere that baking soda could be used in this capacity... I dunno though.
Thanks.
