bare metal foil problem with canopies
Posted by chrysler_jerry on Saturday, February 21, 2004 3:44 PM
Help I am frustraded with bare metal foil and canopies. I have had the same problem time and time again. First I sand them, and then polish them with tooth paste. Then I future wax them and let them sit for at a least 2days if not more. I apply bare metal foil using a q-tip all over the canopy to make sure I have a good seal. Air brush the canopy. Wait a day or two for the paint to cure. When I pull off the foil I have a residue in some spots. Removing the foil is sometimes a pain so I use a tooth pick. Is there anyone else who has tihs problem or I am I just doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for any replies.

First, are you using the original BMF?? I've had the same problem when I used the Gold BMF to mask, and then I read the sheet that comes with it, and it says to only use the Original BMF for masking. Second, if you are, you may want to pull it off a few hours after painting!! I usually paint in the evening, and then remove the masks when I come home from work, as I have had too many problems with leaving masks on for more than a few hours no matter what I use. Alcohol will remove the residue, but be careful not to get it on your frame, as it will start to remove your finish!!! Good luck!!! BTW, check out their site, and see if they have any more ideas: http://www.bare-metal.com/

I had the same problem, left BMF on for a few weeks and had problem removing it, What I finally did was made a wedge out of a wooden toothpick by sanding down both sides. Then used wedge to push underneath foil and pulled up what I could with tweezers. Time consuming but it works and won't scratch the canopy. Residue was easily removed with Goo Gone and a Q-Tip.

I just took the BMF off a tomcat canopy. It had been on for weeks, it came off just fine with a toothpick and cleaned with Goo-Gone. I only use the Matte Aluminum for masking as I have had trouble with others.
