Artist oils

Doesn't really matter if you are using acrylic base. Oil would probably be better. It takes more time to dry so you can work with it longer.

If your base were enamel, then it would be safer to use acrylic for weathering, because the solvent for thinning artist oils might attack your base finish.

I use real oils for washes and blending. As long as the base color is fully cured and you are not scrubbling the paint in, you should have no probles, regardless of the base color. I know of no one usig water based oils, something of an oxymoron, if you ask me.Also, an olil wash will dry very fast as the carrier, the thinner evaporates pretty quickly.

Good Advice. Thanks. Do I have to use the manufacturers's thinner for the artist oils or could I say use MM thinners. Woundn't the thinner from the artist oils attack an acrylic base color? What would be a good brand of artist oils to use? Thanks again.

Most figure painter recommend Winsor & Newton oil paints. Winsor & Newton oil paints are rather expensive so Grummbacher oil paints might be your second choice. Oil paints can be thinned with mineral spirits or turpentine.

I've found the MM thinner to be to agressive and attacked my base coat. I started using mineral spirit with my oil washes.

I have been using lighter fluid as the thinner for my oil washes and it has worked very well for me. Also, I read about water based artist oils and another modelers good experiences with them. I found some at Hobby Lobby and picked up a couple of colors but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I haven't read any bad techniques yet so I expect them to perform well.
