Cutting Out Panels and Scratchbuilding
Posted by cvsaylr on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 2:39 AM

I was wondering if anyone could write or point me to a good tutorial on cutting out aircraft panels and then manufacturing (scratch building?) the reinforcements that those panels would have in real life? It would also be nice to find an article on scratchbuilding interior components too. I've seen lots of pictures of different builds and the authors always say "I scratcbuilt the interior using . . . with no expaination about HOW they scratchbuilt the stuff. I'd like to start doing some better internal detailing but I really have no idea how to go about it.

Mike Ashey was kind enough to make his books available online. He covers almost every aspect of building, but also includes some info on scratchbuilding details. Chapter 6 of the book "Detailing Scale Model Aircraft" has a section on aircraft panels.

The link inhypertex comment does not work as it did not include the www. at the beginning (some will work without the www. but some won't). The full link is www.mikeashey.com/PROJECTS-INDEX-PAGE.htm  and http://www.mikeashey.com/BOOK-INDEX-PAGE%20.htm

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Les. I don't understand why it (the lack of 'www' prefix) would work for me and not for someone else. I just copy and paste the url from my browser. The server seems to respond to both methods. Maybe there is something else wrong with my pasted link? Like the space instead of the url encoded '%20'. My browser (Firefox) seems to automatically replace the space behind the scenes. Maybe other browsers won't do that. I guessing.

Chrome is MUCH better and quicker then Firefox.  If you have never used Chrome, you should give it a try!  Also if you don't already use Ad Block, you should give that a try as well. Makes surfing the net a much better experience

I find scratching the panel itself is a lot easier than the cutting out of the panel.  That is the issue that I labor over.  Three tools I use a lot when cutting out panels are my pinvise with a small drill in it, my Dremel tool with a small rotary saw blade, and an X-acto handle with one of those blades that is shaped like a #11 but has fine saw teeth on it.

As it is not that difficult to make a new panel, I don't worry about saving the one I cut out- I often cut it out in several pieces.
