Need to create a STRAIGHT line of screw heads on my P-51
Posted by cbaltrin on Monday, March 23, 2015 6:05 AM

So I am working on this monogram P-51D. I sanded off all the raised detail and scribed the panel lines. Problem is the forward fuselage engine and accessory access panels have quite prominent screw heads. I am debating taking on the challenge of replacing them. I know how to replicate each screw head so that is not the problem (punching them from .001 styrene sheet) . The problem is getting them placed inj a straight line, and spaced out evenly. I want to drill recessed holes for them to sit in so they are flush with the aircraft skin.   I have thought of several methods but I am confident in none.  I do have a good center drill in a pin vice to start each hole and I even have a drill press with an x-y table...  Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am not so sure the screw heads should be in line.  Dzus fasteners do have a fixed direction, but not too sure about screws- I have my doubts.  Thing is, it may be hard to find which fasteners are screws and which are Dzus.  The easy way to do the Dzus is PE.  There are PE sets for some of the larger scales- not sure if there are for 1:48 or not, but if available they are the easy way to go.

Hmmm:

Try this , Take some real good thread ( maybe silk ) and soak it in Aleens Glue or Elmers , now squeeze out 99 percent of it . Wrap it around the model where the line is going to be . After it dries drill your holes or make your indents and mount the P.E. or whatever .Now remove the thread . A nice straight line of screws or rivets and no damage from the jig !
