dirt inside the canopy
Posted by pathvet9 on Friday, January 1, 2016 5:21 PM

I din't know if it is just my bad luck/technique but I have yet to finish an acceptable closed canopy. The latest was after cleaning very carefully, then using an E-Z Masks on an A-26, before securing the canopies.

Seems like every time, I end up with dust particles that were not there at gluing, coming up and adhering to the underside of the canopy "glass". And it often takes a few days to show up. I am guessing that I have left dust in the cockpit and it wafts up by static?

I guess I will take more care in cleaning up in the cockpit before I close it up but wonder if anyone else has had that problem? Am I missing a step?

BTW, I have had it happen whether or not I dip in Future, this latest I did not.  Bang Head

Cheers, Jake

I get this problem when I have to make mods to the fuselage after gluing on the canopy.  Recently I had to drill a hole.  Try as hard as I might to keep from drilling too far into the cavity, I still ended up with styrene dust in the fuselage that was drawn immediately to the inside surfaces of the canopy :-(

I try to clean out the fuselage before mounting the canopy (air from the airbrush with no paint helps with this), but I have to work harder to ensure the fuselage is completely done before I glue the canopy or windshield on!  I have never found a way to fix this problem except for removing and cleaning canopy.

Yes, often my canopies inside appearence looks like a pillow factory, totally maddening. Now with larger scale fighters I don't cement the main canopy part in place, only the windshield. Then I carefully fit the main bit with tight tolerances, cementing 4 small plastic strip tabs at the front and back internal sides.

They fit into the fuselage interior about 1/8th inch, hard to see when canopy is installed as for flight, then when dust does make it's way inside it's easily removed for a quick airbrush blowout. The tabs keep the canopy in place very well, then I'm a happy camper with a clean canopy.

I often fix the canopy on while doing finishing work by using blue tack/poster tack.  Seals the cockpit area but still lets me remove the canopy easily for whatever reason.

Patrick - would love to see pictures of that technique if you have them. Thanks for the reply.
