Canopy Seams
Posted by pilotjohn on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 1:49 PM

I am working on a 1/72 Bf-109 and am using a one-piece canopy.  The front and rear portions of it seem to fit pretty well to the fuselage, but the center is leaving a large gap.  I have had issues in the past where the canopy seams are usually the worst in the kit.  I have already painted, so I hate try some kind of gap filler and then sand and repaint.  Filling with Super Glue could give me crazing on the clear parts.  I also seem to have a lot of canopies that are too narrow at the front or the back and the fit makes the kit look very unrealistic.

How do you all get past this one?  Do I need to mask and glue the canopy to the fuselage before I do the actual painting?

I have used that white-glue-like material used to make small windows.  Testors makes it, so does Micro-Scale.  I apply it to gap, and when it hardens I brush paint it with a small brush.  Some people just use white glue for this.

I tried some Quick Drying Tacky Glue from Scotch and it worked very well.  Went on like the old Elmers White Glue and dried clear.  Just painted over it.  thanks for the tip Don.
