You might also look at mesh ribbons in the arts and crafts section of your local dollar store or similar. I found a spool of a nice very square weave for a whole $2.00. It's 4 metres in length, so there's enough for hundreds of models.

Not available to everyone for obvious reasons, but if you can get your hands on some transmission filters the micro mesh screens found inside are perfect for applicatlions in modelling. Some filters have more than one screen and size. Some filters only use felt, these you obviously don't want.

I have seen sheets of grill material- I think it was from K & S, in their sheet metal racks.  Don't know whether it is PE or die-punched.  Don't know what your tank's grill looks like, exactly, but it is just a square pattern, then the only thing you have to worry about is the size/pitch of the grating.  I have also seen fine brass screen mesh- I think it is for filters- from Small Parts.

If you have a micheals craft store nearby its worth a check. They sell a whole assortment of random stuff. I know they have various chains and wires in the bead and jewelery section. Was in on the weekend looking for an alternative to expensive e-bay tank tow chains.

i have used cheap jewelry for chains on 1/35. i look in craft stores for it.
