cheap lighting

Being the stingy person I am is there anyway to make a model seem lighted without actually lighting it. Anything but painting it glossy white. I was thinking more of some sort of reflective sheet that you can put inside the model.

I don't know about inside as such, but I've heard that reflective sign material, the same stuff use in freeway and stop signs etc. is very good for this purpose. The other option is to use fluorescent paints to create the effect. Our planetarium did a show years back now called "Star Pioneers" and kitbashed a bunch of old ship and a/c models together to create their ships. Once done, the windows were added with the day-glow paints. Inder a true black light, they were amazing! You could barely tell the difference from about two feet away!

It really doesn't cost as much as you'd think to light a model using fiber optics either. I would guess for an average model with a single white light source, you could do the whole thing reasonably well for under 10 bucks. And while there are other options - in the end nothing looks quite as realistic (or downright cool!) as the real thing in those windows.

Best!

What about bare-metal foil and a drop of future? Then you shine a light, which should reflect off the metalic areas of the model .
