Thanks stikpusher......it's the first time I've used tamiya x22 clear. .tommarow I seal up the decals on the hawker hurricane. And plan on doing the same on the RAF mustang lll. .hopefully the mustang lll exhausts come soon ..haveing bad luck with the kit exhausts on these kits ..thanks again stikpusher. .I'll post some pics on the aircraft link for all to see. ..5-high

Great information,, guys since we're on the subject. .I have a question about clears too . I'm in the middle of decaling the revell 1/32 hawker hurricane old kit ...while waiting in patiently for my trumpeter mustang lll exhaust. Ok ..I usually us future for glossing and decaling but I'm trying out tamiya x22 gloss..I'm going to dot filter it and the mustang too ..would it hold up wits oil based paints and terpintine . ? (White spirits ). 

 

5-high, an oil dot filter with turpentine should be fine over the Tamiya clear once it has dried and cured. The dissimilar layers of oils over acrylics will see to that. It would not hurt also to use a mild thinner such as Mona Lisa brand to really reduce any chance of interaction. 

It's when you use oils over enamels that you will run into problems almost certainly.

I haven't so far had any problems with the Testors dullcoat, just the airbrush cleaning takes a bit more care/time.

I think I will give the Alclad II products a go, based on the over all support for the product.

I have recently swicth to all Alclad clears including the Aqua gloss instead of future which i find lays down very heavy. As long as the Alclad is layed down properly it copes fine with white spirits when doing washes.

I agree that Alclad clear finishes work very well, labeled as Lacquer, but is fully compatible with either acrylic or enamel. The old school Micro Scale finishes are OK for me too.

I really like Future for canopy dipping, might be just my fault but airbrushing it hasn't produced the best results, compared with Alclad.

I tried the Testors lacquer clears, eventually produced fine finish, but seemed a bit "fiddly" relative to finding the right PSI and thinning ratio.

I had used the the local (Australian) product "Pascoes Long Life" in the past and on a recent project.

Pascoes Long Life only barely resembles Future in that it's an acrylic based floor finish. It's barely suitable for use as a floor finish and I wouldn't put it on a model.

As far as I'm aware, there is no actual Future substitute available in Australia.

Although I have read glowing reports by many, inluding yourself, I just could never get it to produce a satisfactory result when used. Adjusting pressure, mixing various amounts of water etc would never achieve a clean finish which I desire.

I also read some reviews of the Humbrol product with others getting good results.

I haven't used Alclad before, but read various post regarding the product. How dose it hold up to washes being used over it which require white spirits or other aggresive methods to remove excess material.

I have started using the Vallejo Primer range, with some OK results. Again, as with Alclad products will it hold up to agressive methods of removing unwanted weathering washes and the like.

I have never had a problem with Future myself in the 20+ years that I've been using the stuff. But it sounds like you have a different product that is not the same and as a result is a problem. As far as good satin and matte coats go, my go to product for many years now has been Humbrol. And recently they have issued the stuff in easier to use larger bottles, rather than their traditional tinlets. 

For a gloss coat I would highly recommend the Alclad Aqua Gloss.

The Vallejo gloss,satin,and matte have worked okay for me also.

If you want Lacquer Clears,the other Alclad line is excellent,especially the flat,it's really a dead flat,I like it for figures.
