best way of securing models in display cases ...

I would agree with Pawel has mentioned. There are ways you can secure them in.

What I usually do in such case (is that a pun?) is I drill two times two small holes and then I take two lengths of thin copper wire, I route this wire around the axle near the wheel and then through the holes. By twisting the wire ends together I can pull it tight. I do it for two wheels, diagonally - like front right and rear left. This way the model doesn't need to be modified, is securely held against the base and can be easily released by cutting or untwisting the wires. The holes and the wires are hidden from the view by the wheels.

apologies, i should've mentioned this - i have tamiya display case type C .. so this is a portable case with transparent shell (acrylic), solid black base. for 1/20 scale cars. it does not have any hooks / braces in the base for fastening the model.

Well if you want your model to be secure but removable i would say some type of magnets in the model.  There are cases for 12" dolls that have metal bases so the dolls, which have magnets in the feet, can be posed in a variety of ways.

Like everyone else, i'm not sure if you want a portable case or something more permanent.

Depends on the type of display case you have. Department store types with glass shelving? Courio cabinets? Homemade display shelving cases? I don't "secure" my kits since they're on display. It's not like I'm going to handle them constantly.

You can buy 72nd scale wheels chokes, but being 72nd scale andn usually only PE, they are more likely to move around than the model.

Is there a high risk of the shelves being knocked which could cause the models to move. Have you considered adding them to a base, the extra weight will help.
