A wash is highly thinned paint that is intended to collect in recesses and around raised details, creating a shadow effect.

A glaze is a transarent layer of paint (usually more thinned than a wash) that is intended to evenly cover an entire area of the model. Lots of modelers refer to these as a 'filter.' The size of the area covered can vary from the entire model to a very small area.
