White "primer" on recessed surface of photo etch?

Ahah. I thought it was either a chemical plating or a laminate. Thanks for explaining.

This set is a type of brass called "Nickel Silver". Prior to the etching, the sheet stock has been polished. Where the etch produces a recess but not a cut through, the finish will be a matte finish produced by the etching chemical.

Nickel silver is a warm silver color, polishing it makes it appear more colorful.

I am not familiar with car kits or this brand of PE. My first thought was that they might be emant to be like this and these parts should not be painted, like the pre coloured PE Eduard does, but seeing the pics i doubt it. My guess is it is a result of the etching process, maybe these guys do it different from others. I checked scalemates and while tehre are no reviews, there is an image of that set which also has the white areas.

I notice on the set and looking at the instructions that parts 2 and 5 are duplicated but it looks like you only need one of each. If so, take one out and test spray it. Thats the only way to be sure.

That said, I'm not really familiar with the PE manufacturing process so best I can do is guess.

Except I'm positive the white is not a 'primer'. It is most likely the stainless substate after the nickle silver is removed by chemical.

In any case, it is certainly safe to prime and paint as you would for any photoetch. That 'white' needs no special treatment.

I hope somebody who actually understands how PE is produced might chime in here.
