Creating Spinning Props?
Posted by 68GT on Sunday, August 23, 2020 5:39 PM

Anyone here have some good results in creating spinning props?  Was thinking of maybe printing on some clear slide film or something similar with an inkjet.

There are some ready-made that you can buy, too, like

If you are willing to make inkjet decals, here is what I do.  I scan kit prop from front.  Many photo editing packages have a function call rotational blur.  I pick the center of the prop and select a degree of blur.  I adjust the amount to get a rotation effect.  Then I lower the transparency to about 30% or so.  I cut a disk of clear plastic the same diameter, and apply the decal to the disk.  I cut the blades off the prop, and saw the in two, front half and back half.  Glue the disk to the rear half, the front to the the disk.  This gives a prop that really looks like it is rotating.

You know Don I did see you post from a ways back and was going to give it try since I have Elements here at home. I didn't see much of anything else in a search and just want a cheap solution for a replacement prop. The photoetch looks great but would cost much more than what I paid for the old Fujimi Spitfire. I got 2 of them for $5 but one was missing the prop.

Photoshop elements is a fine program.  I will check and see if it has the rotation blur function.  I use Corel's Paint Shop Pro, which is about the same price as Elements.  I did get a good deal on Elements, so I have it too.
