Techniques-or How did he do that?
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Saturday, November 5, 2022 8:42 AM

Hi Ya'll;

We have been talking about compounds to prep a surface or Buff one. There have been two mentioned.Comet Cleanser(With or without Bleach, Doesn't matter) And good old Colgate White Toothpaste(NOT GEL!). Pepsodent works too!

There are many others that are around the house maybe. I used to do NMF aircraft and Cars without chrome with Rub "N" Buff Natural Silver. Then there's various Auto compounds available in Wally World(Wal-Mart, to the uniniated) and the Auto Parts Stores as well. These range to Mequires finishing Compounds and Polishes to 3-M brand Polishing compounds. Some would clean and others would smooth and lastly there was the polishes.

I don't know who started using Future , but that was a boon too. Now for Canopies you have those, Plus a myriad of Headlight Cover polishes that will bump clarity up there like magic if prepped right! The Point? When looking for something to use on a model, look outside the box. Just because it doesn't say, perhaps, Micro-Mark, Tamiya or Vallejo etc. that it won't work.

Yes, these are made for models, BUT sometimes they carry extra baggage. Such as you can only use other of their products after that. Then there's the Cost and Availability. Which in some places is non-existant! The cost is a factor in shelf life too. Did you know a Tube of Colgate or Pepsodent will outlast a tube of The major brand of tubed speciality products. By 10-1. Amazing isn't it? Now there are wood polishes out there that contain Bee's wax. Best protectant, Neutral Polish and Gloss surfacer you can use!

You must be careful of Clearcoats though. the Craft clear Glosses in the spray cans will work better for you. Why? Well I have a Triumph Curbside (Monogram) that I reviewed years ago for the Central Arkansas Modelers Society when Jack Elliot had his shop in Jacksonville . Yes, we had a news letter even then. The Clearcoat has turned the car almost a tea colored silver undercoat car. It was TESTORS! The car was molded in a medium level pewter colored plastic, it has remained that color inside the body all these years!!

The only drawback to any Bee's Wax containing product is this, In U.V. light they will get a golden hue to the color. There are others there too.The standard Silver polish will work for polishing a BMF plane Before applying decals and stuff! Just don't use to much pressure! Fibreglas polishes for Cars and Boats, will work on many models and paints. Remember it's made to work on Gel-coat which is a plastic!

I keep seeing posts about UV light altering things, which leaves me wondering where a model would get prolonged exposure to UV light.  There isn't going to be any indoors, not even by a window, and I haven't seen any residential lighting that emits it.

Eaglecash867, Hi!

Actually there is. In some houses with Big window areas and depending if the curtains are Open and what direction the house is facing, the sunlight can come in through the windows and shine on the model. I have seen this many times and I don't think the home-owner even realized it.

The higher bands of UV light that generally cause damage to things, UVB and UVC, are almost 100% blocked by household glass.  There is glass that will pass those wavelengths, but they don't use it in home construction.  I didn't believe it either until I got more serious about providing the optimal habitat for my reptiles and invested in a UVB meter.  I confirmed that the amount of UVB coming through the glass was negligible...MAYBE 1 microwatt per square meter, when the measurement outside the window was well over 300.  That measurement was taken less than an inch from the inside of the glass, and the energy quickly attentuates with further distance.  Nothing is traveling beyond more than a foot or two beyond the glass.  There are probably lots of other factors causing it though. Cool

Hi Eaglecash867!

Yeah, I am sure there is. We must always factor in the Whole environment, not Just the effect or any that U.V. has on these things. I would assume that if the model is in a case that can "Breathe" properly, there shouldn't be a problem. Now exposed on display, brings other factors into the equation. Cooking oils Do aerosolize and cover quite a bit of a house, it's like a cough. The Molecules travel a lot further than we think.

That said, the contents of the dust that settles on an unprotected model contain pollutants that also cause this yellowing. We just don't see it. I live in a modern(less than 20 year old house) with two Cats and Three dogs. I am constantly cleaning the display pieces in my room in which the door is always closed. Cat hair and dust are carried in the air currents. And all filters are changed every thirty days wether they need it or not! SOO. Nuff said.

Yup.  All you have to do is spray a little of even the fume free oven cleaner on any wall in your kitchen and you'll see a bunch of yellow/brown slime form and start sliding down the walls...and those are walls that look clean.

I have a nice, powerful air cleaner that runs 24/7, and dust my apartment top to bottom on a regular rotating schedule.  My cat, being a Pixie Bobcat, has a nice dense, double coat so he gives me very little extra work to do...he doesn't shed much at all, thankfully.

Eaglecash867:

Your cat sounds like He's? very handsome. Does he watch you work like my Midnight Siamese watches me? Oh, My cat has been a savior when a part heads to the Vortex in the Carpet monster, She always seems to find the part and not chew it up.  She will spit it out on a Tool-box I keep on the floor next to my bench?

Funny thing is, I did NOT teach her to do this.

He does more than watch sometimes, and he has also brought lots of parts back out of the wormhole...I think cats must have time travel capability which allows them to jump forward in time to where the part went.

One tomcat giving the face rub of familial recognition to another Tomcat.  Sometimes he helps.  LOL

Yeah!

They seem to know when another Kitty is around. Even if it flies. Cats are mysterious for sure! Did you know that a cat can jump from the ground straight up almost to my eye level(I'm am 5'6") Mine has done this more than once when I startle her! I wonder if we could learn how to do that with cars and keep them airborne?

I cannot speak directly to this, but I will say that for many years, any books or paperwork I leave in direct sunlight in my office will turn yellow quickly.  Newspapers are notorious for this, so perhaps a simple test - leave a fresh newspaper half in and half out of the sunlight in your house and see if there's a difference.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
