submarine acoustic tiles

For the last few months I've been reviewing and researching ways to recreate the acoustic tiles on submarines for a LA 688 class 1/350 kit. To be more specific, here's a close up of one of the subs with said acoustic tiles:

... the closest resolution I found with this modeler online:

... I've looked into making custom stencil (too small to make for this scale), creating a foam/sponge cutout, to a pain staking masking process, or even perhaps using a knife to make light cut lines.

I'm real interested in other possible methods out there Yes

I have not tried this myself but,

Maybe try stretching a bit of pantyhose over the model.

I have seen guys do this to replicate the heat tiles on spaceshuttle models.

Spraypaint the darker color first, ( allow to dry ) then stretch the pantyhose into position, then a slightly lighter color to represent the tiles.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"
