Super Glue?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 26, 2004 9:37 AM
Hey everyone, just had some quick quesions about superglue. I know theres at least three types of super glue: super glue gel, thin super glue and gap-filing super glue. Where can I get gap-filling super glue and can I use thin super glue to seem up things? Is there any type of super glue I havn't listed? Should I stay away from super glue gel? Any advice would be great, thanks!

AM -

Not an expert on CA's, but the gap filling CA goes by the name Zap-a-Gap and should available at any hobby shope that deals with plastic models. Most of the mail order places also have it too. An accelerator, (speeds curing) is also handy. Don't think any one uses thin CA for gap filling, just doesn't have the viscosity to stay put!

Couple of things - for "seeming", styrene liquid or tube cement, can work well. Just use a LITTLE more thab usual, and when it oozes out, and cures, just sand it down. The trick is knowing how much to use, obviously too much can be a problem.

Also - all CA's aren't created equal. The "drug store" CAs, can be pretty bad. Very thin and don't bond as quickly or as well as the higher priced brands. I've had good luck with Zap-a-Gap and the Model Master CA.

No experience with the gel. The package said "for non-porous surfaces", so I stay away. If any one has had luck with it, please let us know.

Good luck!

Archer out.

Zap A Gap CA+ is the best for filling small gaps. The thinner ones can be used if mixed with talc. Iv'e used the gel for attaching photoetch to resin, but don't care much for it.

ArmorMaster,
if you are gap filling seams, try a gap filling CA (Zap) and accellerator.
then you can sand immediately.
but you only have abt 30 min or less to sand it out.

if you let the CA cure completely before sanding, it will be harder than a rock,
and more importantly, much harder than the surrounding styrene.

Practice on some sprue scraps or a test model to get a feel for it.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Zap-A-Gap is a brand name, and there are other gap-filling CA glues. I prefer Zap-A-Gap myself.

I've also tried the CA gels and haven't had any luck with them. Not sure what it is, but the joint always appears to be weak to me. I just stay away from them now.

Super glue gel does not flow easily into the gap and your left with a lot of hardened glue to sand away. Thin super glue has a longer curing time and ,just like what Archer said, would not fill the gap easily.

Just remember to use them in a well ventilated area and use only a small amount at a time.
