Washes: Acrylic or enamel?

Getting ready to paint my Type IXc U-boat. Paint job will be enamel. Will apply gloss lacquer over paint job and planning to use acrylics for the wash. My reasoning being that the acrylics won't bite into the lacquer coat like an enamel paint might.
Is my reasoning correct?
