A Future Success
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 1:37 PM
I have been wanting to try Future as a gloss finish to a model since I first read of it.Approve [^] After reading the thread by Heath and all the replies I then went to Swanny's site for "The Complete Future"Cool [8D] I reread Swanny's story a few times and then reread Heath's threadSmile [:)]

After taking all this information into account I then first tried using an AB with heavy coats no luck, and then fine coats on some scraps. I was not pleased with either resultSad [:(] More than likely it is the AB as the AB is three days older than dirtBanged Head [banghead]

I then went to the brush knowing if I messed up I could strip the Future. I went straight to the model, a 1/72 scale Regulus missile from Strombecker. I stuck a paintbrush in the nose, held the model tail up and began to apply a heavy coat of Future. As I worked down the Future ran to the nose as it is self leveling as Swanny said. Once the missile was completely covered I put the paintbrush holding the missile in a vise and began to wick away the buildup at the nose with a paper towel.

I am so pleased with the resultThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] Thanks to Heath, Swanny and those that posted in Heath's threadBow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

It is so true, if you want an answer about modeling it is here in the ForumBig Smile [:D]

Glad you found a method that works for you. I am surprized how many folks are having trouble airbrushing Future. I spray it unthinned with a Paasche H3 at about 20 psi and have never had a problem.

Yeah, I tried diluting the future and nothing happens. I go unthinned too.

That's great Richard!!! I tried Airbrushing future this weekend, and I got runs on one side, and orange peel on the other!! I'm gonna even it out, and give it another shot....if it doesn't work after that, I'm gonna have to get a brush. How big was the brush you were using, and what type (ie Sable, or synthetic?) I have brushed future on small parts I decal, and it works perfect, just been a bit intimidated to try it on something so large as a 1/24 car body. I did read another spot over the weekend in the forums that said to NOT spray it on so that it looks wet!!! Meaning, you want to kind of spray it on so it looks a bit orange peeled, and dry.....supposedly after 15-20 minutes it will level itself out completely, and you just mist on 2-3 coats. That is obviously what I DIDN'T do!!! LOL So, I'm gonna use an alcohol pad to "smooth" out my current finish, and reshoot tonight using that technique!! I'm gonna conquer this, I swear I will!!!! LOL

You will Heath, I had trouble with it too. Sometimes I still do, but I just remain patient and know that I can fix anything that comes up.

Heath,

The brush was a straight edge of about 1/2 inch made of synthetic bristles.

I have a feeling that the bristles or the brush don't make much difference. The brush is nothing more then a method of getting the Future from the bottle/cup to the project.

I wish I could be of more help Heath. Let me know what I can do.

Just lend me your support brother!! LOL If I come up with questions, don't worry I'll bug ya!! I'm still on a learning curve with everything related to modeling, so I try to not let it get to me. If it worked for you, it has to work for me eventually, eh?! LOL I can't wait till school is out though, so I actually have some time!! As it is I keep procrastonating on school work to try and work this thing out. After May 21 I'm a free man, as I am taking the Summer off!!! OH, and I WILL get some modeling done, this I SWEAR!!!! LOL

Heath,

You have my support along with every other modler here in the forum. Good luck on finishing your classes and lets see what happens after the school year is over. Remember, modeling will always be here. School won't so get all you can from school.

Well, I hear ya!! I'm 27, so I think that going to school later has helped me keep focus a lot better than if I was younger (LOL....SURE!!!) I'm just taking advantage of my VA benefits before they run out, to try and snatch some sort of degree. Even though I am quite happy in my career, I just want a back up so to speak. Anywho, No worries about school getting left out of the loop!! I should be a clown I juggle so much!! LOL

So, I wiped down the runs, and smoothed out the orange peels......everything the alcohol touched turned white and foggy (which was expected)......then I commenced to "misting" it on with the A/B and the white foggy patches started to disappear (also expected)....I have noticed much better results this time around by using a LOT LESS than what I was trying to spray on the other night. So, very light coats every 15-20 minutes seems to be the ticket.....the best thing about it so far Richard, is the easy repair of Future!!! If there is a run, it just takes a quick swipe with an alcohol pad, and another quick spray.....it blends in perfectly!!! Another light coat or two, and I'm gonna let her dry for a couple days, and get back to my research paper!!
