Questions on model bases....
Posted by Jeeves on Sunday, May 23, 2004 9:44 PM
I found myself some pretty neat plaques at Wally World that are the perfect size for displaying 1/48 scale models. I am planning on building 3 of them so that I have various bases to take photos of my completed planes with. I won't actually attach the planes- but will use the wood bases purely for photos...so on to my questions:

Base #1 will be a concrete hardstand....how big should the square slabs of concrete be in regards to a 1/48 scale aircraft?

Base #2 will be a WWII carrier deck... what can I use for the decking?? Will the ribbed styrene work or is the scale of the "planks" off?? If so- which size styrene? If not, what else can I use?

Base #3 will be a grass field.... no questions there Wink [;)]

Thanks...

What makes the squares are the expansion joints in the concrete, and they are basically just grooves in the concrete. It will vary with the reinforcing and type of concrete, but I'd say that 12' would probably be in the ballpark. 12' at 1/48 scale would be 3" square.

How wide were the planks? 12" or so? If the real planks were 12" wide that would be 1/4" at 1/48 scale. Evergreen makes strips in that size (as well as many other sizes. Check here: http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/Strips.htm) and their products are available at most good hobby stores. You could also just take a sheet of styrene and scribe it at 1/4" intervals. Then paint it and put some wash down in the scribe marks.

You probably already know this, but to convert scale sizes, just convert the scale distance to inches and divide by the scale. For example: 12' at 1/48 scale = 12 x 12 = 144 inches / 48 = 3"

Later ... I was looking at Evergreen's site and they have some styrene sheets formed to look like various patterns. They have one called "Board And Batten" that might look OK but they don't have any pictures of what it looks like. The page with all of them is here:

Err... I had forgotten I had posted this one LOL Thanks Scott for the info on the concrete...I am unsure as to how wide the planks were on the carrier decks. The LHS while mainly a R/C Racing shop does have an Evergreen display so I'll check it out after work.
