DRY TRANSFERS?! PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 21, 2004 3:15 PM
Ok, I'm building a Revel 1/48 F-15E and I've got Twobobs 'Operation Anaconda' sheet of decals. For the nose art of all 3 aircraft there are dry transfers, and I've got NO clue how to use these things. I've searched online and I've gotten rough ideas how to do them but I'm COMPLETELY confused how to use them. Could one of you PLEASE give me a very specific explanation on how to use these suckers?!??!?!?!?

If it were me, I would ge some clear decal paper, put the dry transfers on the decal paper, coat it with a sealer and apply it as a regular decal. Dry transfers can be a real problem when trying to apply them directly to a model. I know, been there done that!

Good luck,
Richard

Cut the dry transfer from the sheet giving room around the graphic. Remove the protective backing from the back of the graphic. Carefully position the graphic EXACTLY where you want it. No second chance with a dry transfer. Hold the graphic in position with light finger pressure or a small piece of tape. Use a blunt, rounded tip tool, a burnishing tool works well, and gently burnish the graphic area until the graphic has transfered completely to the model. You will generally have a visual indication that transfer has occured. Gently remove the front carrier paper & your done. I've seen one tip about warming the transfer with a hair blow dryer before transfer, but I haven't tried that personally.

how do you remove the backing? it seems to be just a piece of paper, should I just sorta cut and peel it off with an exacto knife?
Also apx how much 'burnishing' will it take for the graphic to transfer?

The protective paper on the back of the transfer is on the side that will go on the surface of the model. I don't know the brand your using, but the backing will generally peel off fairly easily & an X-Acto knife to get it started should work well. Amount of burnishing depends on the quality & age of the transfer, so it's hard to say how much. Just be sure that the entire graphic is burnished or else some of the graphic may stay on the carrier & not on the model. It's easier to do than describe, but if you watch the graphic you should get a visual indication when transfer has occured.

Don't understand your question. There should't be any paper left on the back of the graphic. Sure you aren't just seeing the back of the ink ? Usually white on high quality dry transfers.

I think what I end up doing is while trying to split the backing paper from the transfer I actually end up splitting the paper in half. So I get half of the backing paper off but I still get strands left on the graphic side. I might just try to use a fine sanding stick and scrub off the strands on the transfer itself.

GRYAR!! SOO AKWARD THESE TRANSFERS!!!
