Cutting plastic to mate with resin modifications?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 12, 2003 1:27 PM
I posted this note in one of the threads, but it looks like it got buried. I would surely appreciate thoughts on the best way to accomplish blending resin components (like a new nose section) with the existing kit. Rather than re-invent the process, I thought someone here might have the answer for me.

Here's the earlier post:

I'm looking for advice on the best method for modifying a fuselage. In this case it will be the Hasegawa F-8E, which I want to convert to the D model. I have the Cutting Edge resin to do the replacement, but I'm not really sure of the best way to cut the plastic and the resin, so that they accurately mate.
I think I'm looking for advice on just what is the best cutting tool, and method of using it, to assure nice clean and true cuts.

Thanks for the help,

Pish

Probably your best bet would be a small razor saw and mitre box. This would ensure the straightest possible cut. Another thought might be a dremel tool at the slowest of speeds. Either which way you are going to have to do some filing, filling, and fidgeting anyway.

I agree with the Freak, razor saws are the way to go. To make the cutting go a bit easier (on the plastic end of things) thin out the backside of the area which is to be cut. Do this with a dremel tool and grinding bit. Don't thin it out too much, however. Once you do this, you'll have an easier time of cutting through with the razor saw.
