Can mineral spirits hurt Future?
Posted by targetdriver on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 9:28 PM
Before I went any further I thought that I should ask somebody with more experience. Big Smile [:D]

On my latest project I used model master enamels and used Future as a gloss coat for the few decals that needed to go on. I coated the entire model to also prepare it for a wash. If I use an oil based wash with mineral spirits, can that hurt the Future or any spot where I may have missed the enamel?

Thanks for your input!

Nope, not at all. Oil-based products can't hurt Future (sufficiently dried, of course) since it's a water-based acrylic. Future does a good job of protecting the paints underneath it. You may have a problem on the spots where you missed putting the Future on, so proceed with caution. I've found out that some enamels, even if left to dry for days, can be "activated" by enamel thinners like mineral spirits. This means that the enamel paint has not sufficiently cured. To be safe, I would suggest that you go over these missed spots where you plan to apply a wash and spray/brush on a coat of Future. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Thanks, that's what I thought but I wanted to be real sure. I added another coat of Future just to make sure that I didn't miss anything. The base coat has dried for at least a week before the first coat of Future and it will probably be a few days before I get any more work done.

As long as the Future has cured for at least 24 hours, 48 is better, it won't be affected by the thinner in the wash.
