lead foil

I wouldn't know where to buy it. I've used the foil from around the cork of wine bottles, or even the high quality chocolate coins (like the ones they make in the Netherlands, they use a thick foil, not at all like regular tin foil). Some people prepare the foil for painting by etching it with a weak acid (like vinegar). I've only used the foil a couple of times for seatbelts. I didn't prepare the foil for painting, but had no adhesion problems.

I get mine at http://www.mcmaster.com/ Look up lead foil tape. Or Item #76315A61, or catalog page #3201. You'll have to soak the adheasive off the back with Acetone or lacquer thinner, but it's not a big deal. Keep in mind that this is dangerous stuff. No eating or drinking or smoking while you are using it and clean up your self and your work area after you use it. Don't use power sanders (Dremels) on it without some sort of particle mask. As long as you're careful, it's a wonderful modelling medium.

Paint it like you would any other metal surface.

I've used empty toothpaste tubes....works like a charm

If you go to the dentist, ask if you can have the little lead patches that come with the X-ray film. They are perfect for small tarpaulins or to be cut up for seatbelts/harnesses.

I got a bag with enough lead floil to last me for ever or until my stash is gone :)
