How do you remove chrome plating from parts?

I thought I saw an article on this somewhere but I can't find it now. Anyway I am building the AMT '79 Trans Am. Which is by the way a terrible kit. There are several parts that I want to paint but are chrome plated. So How do I effectively remove this without just scraping it off?

I soak the parts in Kitchen bleach for some time, stripping time varies between black that has chlorine or amonnia in it.

Works well and does not attack the plastic, at times cleanup with a brush is needed.

My favorite method of stripping chrome is Easy Off oven cleaner. Works fast and strips right down to bare plastic.

use simple green it will strip all 3 layers on chrome plated parts

I use Liquid Plumr. It works like a charm. For some reason, on AMT kits you have to let the parts soak for a few hours to get the chrome off, but on Revell chrome, its strips in a few minutes. Weird.......

I noticed the same thing, some Kits strip in a matter of minutes others need hours or even 2~3 days.

What is simple green and where do I get it in the St. Louis area? I have never heard of that product before. Otherwise I will try the bleach of oven cleaner. They happen to be sitting in the cabinet right now. However this simple green stuff sounds interesting.

Any department store should have Simple Green in the cleaning section. It's what I use.

Plastic chrome plating is a painting proccess and anything that will strip lacquer will work. Parts are painted with clear lacquer and while still wet placed into a vaccum chamber where aluminum is vaporized. The aluminum is deposited on the lacquer forming a very shinny plated like look. Sometimes this is sealed with additional lacquer makeing for a coating that is a bit harder to strip.
