Weathering gunship gray help needed
Posted by mass tactical on Saturday, December 11, 2004 9:19 AM
Hello group. Looking for your always great advise on weathering techniques. Just airbrushed my F-16A Plus with the appropriate FS colors using Model Master Acrylics and plan to use an oil wash for the panel lines. My question is, what is the best way to tone down the gunship gray which is really stark even in 1/48th scale? I want the aircraft to appear that it has been in service so any help I can get on properly weathering this bird will be appreciatedBig Smile [:D].

One way that might work would be to dry-brush a lighter grey over the gunship grey once you finish the wash and let it dry. That might give it the appearance of having been in the weather for a bit.

Others may have some better ideas. Good luck on your build, and I look forward to seeing pics!

This isn't gunship gray but it's close enough. This Me-262 was first preshaded along the panel lines with dark gray, then the base coat was sprayed in between the panel lines, followed by a "dust" coat of Pactra "buff"-all acrylic- the photos don't do it justice, it really gives that gray a well worn look and accents the 1/48th scale.

Hope this helps

After you oil wash the panel lines try using some dark pastel chalk dust along areas that would normally look the dirtest like the engine exhausts and leading and trailing edges of the wings.
