You can also use shrink tubing, placed around sprue,then painted.

if you want to take the easy way out there are aftermarket sets of both spent and live ammo for the tanks and artillery... looks real good! If you wanna do it yourself probably brass tubing as mentioned above, maybe some flat brass stock to make the casing end...

Nothing looks more like metal than the real thing....
copper or brass wire, at the right thickness, cut to small casings.
small brass tubing maybe.
