landing lights and collision lights need to be bright--but what about formation striplights? Am thinking of Glo-Paint and black lights. Has anyone tried this??

What you've asked is a bit of a challenge.

My suggestion, seeing as you say your electronically challenged, would be to skip the LED idea, and go with fibre optics.
The LED's you would need to suit such a scale are the type that are used in mobile phones.
They are extremely small, and are classed as SMD (Surface Mount Device), and would be near impossible for you to solder.

As for the optics, you could quite easily find some to suit, there are funky lamps out there that have a bundle of optics sticking out of the top.
Ask some of the guys in the Sci Fi forum.
They would be your best bet for advice and sourcing

Hope this helps a little
