Trimtape: Cheating?
Posted by Bones-coa on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 11:06 AM
Have any of you guys used trimtape instead of masking and spraying that fine black line across a fuselage? I tried it on a model last night and it looks pretty good. The main problem is of course is if I want to have a chipping effect.

If it works and does what you want, then why not? If you decide that you don't like it, you can always remove it and paint the stripes on.

Not sure about trim-tape(don't recognise name), but I have used generic line decals for the same purpose.

There's no such thing as cheating in this hobby!
Any technique or product you can use to satisfactorily achieve the desired effect should be just fine.
And what's stopping you from chipping?

Yes,

I've used the Pactra tape on my 1/72 F-4J's missiles:
.

Sorry, this one's a little blurry.
.

You can see the stripes on the missles a little better here.

In any case, it was a lot easier using the trim tape than painting the silly lines on the missiles.

These are my thoughts exactly, everytime I go to Hobby Lobby I prowl the store looking at everything and anything that I think I might be able to use at some point.

I prefer to use black decal striping. The tape is a little thick for scale.

Bones -

I'll go with Lufbury on this one. The Pactra tape works great, usuallty use it on AA ordinance and things like LGBs. rjk is correct it's tecnically thick for most scales, but it hasn't really hurt the overall effect. I've used it on things from 1/72 to 1/32. Wouldn't be without it. AND it can be used as a reverse mask! Paint the "line color" first, seal it if you like, apply the tape, and spray the base color. Remove the tape and you have a "painted" line.

Archer out.
