My all-purpose wash is flat black. It looks pretty much 100% accurate, no matter what the color its being applied over!(I've never been a fan of trying to "color coordinate" the wash with the model's base coat. It just doesn't look real to me...)
So, go with black!

First, please hit you caps lock to "off' please! Wink [;)]

As far as weathering you can use washes, pastels and a variety of other techniques.

As to where you should apply the weathering, wherever it's appropriate. Crew entry areas and engine cowlings (as well as any other access areas) are prime areas for wear to occur.

Also, fuel, oil & hydraulic leaks may manifest themselves here and there. For that, you just have to do a bit of research to see where a leak occurred on a certain aircraft.

Now, for what colors to use, just experiment!
