Here's a method an old guy that spent his whole life building models for Northrop told me about. It takes some work an patience, but it works well:
Go to your local hardware store and get some threaded-end rod, a couple of washers and nuts for each end, and brass inserts that fit the threaded ends of the rod. Drill your holes in the model and the base, epoxy the brass inserts into the model and base, then bend the rod as desired, thread the nuts and washers onto the rod, fit the rod onto the base and tighten the nut securely, then do the same to the model on the other end of the rod. If it's a big model, you may want to dab a drop of epoxy over the nut/washer assembly to revent slipping. Done correctly, the mountings will last forever in that position.

you can also use clothes hanger and bend it to the shape you desire for a stand.

That would work. Or possibly use 'square' tubing instead of round??

Murray

I have found the fit between the rod and tube to be snug enough that this hasn't been a problem so far. However I can see where this could be an issue with larger models or ones displayed at a more radical angle than I have mine.
In that case you could just do 2 rod/tube assemblies in tandem and that would cure that.
Give it a shot and see how it works for ya.

Merlin,

How do you keep the model from 'spinning' on the stand? I would think that might be an issue especially when the display isn't 'level flight'??

Sounds pretty cool though...

You otta be ashamed of yourself, nsclcctl Big Smile [:D]

A method that I like to use is get a length of 1/8 inch brass rod and 5/32 inch brass tubing [available at most hardware and hobby stores.
With a pin vice I drill a hole in the bottom of the fuselage just large enough to accommodate the tubing. I usually tape the fuselage halves together to do this.Measure out the tubing so that one end touches the top of the inside of the fuselage and cut it so the other end is flush with the bottom of the outside of the fuselage.
Superglue the tube[top and bottom] into place into one of the fuselage halfs then complete the model as normal.
Get a wooden base and finish it to your liking. Drill a hole in it large enough to accommodate the rod.Cut the rod to desired length and insert.
If you want your plane to be displayed at an angle you can either bend the rod or my preference is to angle the tubing to the desired position in the fuselage before gluing into place.
You can paint the rod or leave it natural
Hope this makes sense. It's really very easy[That's why I'm able to do it!] and it looks pretty darn good in my opinion.
Good luck!Smile [:)]
