Casting Resin parts...
Posted by JoeRugby on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 3:01 PM
I picked up a Marquette 1/72 Yak-3. Detail is not bad, fit is a total pig's breakfast...so much filler and sanding and rescribing...UGH!

Then thE Imp of the Perverse caught me...it is such a small plane...what about Casting it in resin using the injected model as the master!!!

Any input out there for me...

Joe,
I can assure you that using the original injection molded article as a master for making molds for resin casting CAN be done - quite easily - if you know how.
I've been doing this type of thing for more than a decade - and if you want to have a look at some of my resin work, see this link to a model I've built.......
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36907
The model you see is a 1/12 scale model - and it's a resin copy of a spun cast pewter original. I made RTV latex molds of all the parts, cast them in resin, and detailed and assembled the model. Came up pretty well, don't you think?
Now, the topic is really too complicated to do a "how to" in this forum, so email me at the link below and we can start you off moving in the right direction - remember that the materials are fairly expensive, so mistakes can be costly (hear the voice of experience here?) - it's better to get a little info to help you start off right.
Hope to speak to you soon.

Cheers, LeeTree

Listen to Lee he knows resin casting. Wink [;)] He helped me with my resin Baton Rouge kit and I learned tons from his wisdom.

Lee, I've never built a motorcycle, and my last car model was many months ago. But thats a super, super build, especailly when you tell me you cast your own resin for all the parts. Amazingly well done.

Isn't the casting only as good as the master?

Surely you aren't talking about making reproductions for anything other than personal use. Evil [}:)]

Yes, there is that issue that should be addressed......I did worry about that little issue when I was making the molds for the Britten bike model - but after consulting with the sales manager at Brittco (the company that actually made the real bike AND the model) I was assured that I would breach no copyright laws if I was to make molds and cast copies for my own personal use - as long as I was not going to sell, market, or distribute the parts to another party.
So I don't know what the original intent was - to copy the plane and sell the copies? Can't say. All I know is that most model companies would have better lawyers and more money than I do - I don't want to head down that road.
Anyway - good luck with the project and if you need some moldmaking advice, just ask.

Cheers, LeeTree
