substitutes for future floor polish
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 16, 2003 7:17 PM
Are there any products (brands or types of) that can be used instead of future floor polish.

I simply can't find it in my country.

maybe something home made?

thanks in advanced

Where are you? In the UK, it is sold as Johnson's Klear (find it in supermarkets).

I'm from South Africa, and the only version(s) of Future I've found here have ammonia as the active cleaning component - is this the same as the version mentioned in the magazine articles? If so, is there any danger of the ammonia damaging your airbrush (I use a Badger 150)?

I have found two alternatives that seem to work - I'm sure you can get these elsewhere as well. "One Step", also from SC Johnson, gives reasonable results, and a new one I found today from Cobra called "Brilliant Shiner" - a modelling colleague uses this for motorcycle models and his results are GOOD!

Future doesn't have amonia in it. At least it doesn't say it does. It's not hazardous so shipping shouldn't be too expensive. Do you know anyone in the states or the UK that could ship some to you? A bottle of it will last forever so the cost wont be too bad compared to other products. Best of luck.

I was trying to find Future in the US (well, actually I asked my wife, ooops) and of course discovered it is no longer sold under that name. In the process of researching, I came across this page:

http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

which seems to cover Future across the years and for many countries.  Def. not US specific.  The page is up to date an covers 2013 labels.

It depends a bit on how you want to use it.  Its effect on canopies is somewhat unique.  For dipping its viscosity is really optimum.  However, if all you want is a gloss clearcoat there are a number of brands of clear acrylic gloss, especially in rattle cans.  Also, clear urethanes make good glosscoats, and you can find both rattle cans and cans of brushable stuff.  The later can be thinned appropriately for airbrushing.  Urethane varnish does take longer to dry than acrylic, however.

Don, do you just use hardware store-variety laquer thinner for thinning the urethanes?

No, mineral spirits or turpentine.  They are designed for use with paint thinner, but these days there is some real junk being sold as "paint thinner."  Hold out for cans specifically  labeled mineral spirits or turpentine to make sure you do not get the junk.  The junk has a milky color, not perfectly transparent, and has a lot of solid junk- sand like particles, but in those opaque bottles or cans you cannot see it.

okay, thanks Don...I'll likely give the urethane a try to see how it works for me.

The product formerly known as Future is now known as Pledge® FloorCare Multi Surface Finish.

well it's a case of "it is but maybe it isn't"...That is in fact the new name for the old Future Floor Polish but as I've mentioned before, the formula has purportedly changed and is no longer (some say) satisfactory for use as a glosscoat. Now, I am unable to confirm that however as I've never used the new stuff and quite frankly I was never even a big fan of the old product (as applied through an airbrush).

Still works for dipping canopies and windows, however.

Sounds good. SC Johnson is sure proud of the stuff for $6.20 a bottle.

I see this is available on Australia eBay, advertised as now out of production, at $25!!!

Is this as good as the original Future, has the formula in fact changed or is this just rebranding?

What is the new name in USA, I have someone who can bring a bottle back for me

ive read that, it is a bit old, and theres been some rebranding (and product/formula change?) since

I'm considering buying the Pledge Floor care that is available on eBay but want to know if this does the job, as good as the old Future?

Also what is it called in USA now?

One thing I have done in the past is make a wash of ten percent clear flat or gloss and then the rest thinner .This must be airbrushed of course . I have specifically used Testors Model master Enamel line . I won't , for the most part touch any acrylics .

PFM (Pledge FloorCare Multi-Surface) is the correct name.  There's nothing special about PFM.  It's a clear acrylic. But PFM is hard to beat for creating a protective surface for washes and decals because it's so cheap.  I wouldn't use it for a final glossy coat.

This is definitely NOT a good choice for clear-coating;(PFM). I thought the first bottle was a one-off bad lot...it went on way too watery. Unlike their floor polish of years back. So, I bought a second bottle...exact same result. I will never use this again. Basically ruined 2 models and many, many weeks of work.

I have gone back to the tried and true rattle can method using Tamiya or better yet...Testors. (Gloss and Flat).

How long does it take to dry? 24 hour deal? or basically, how long after can you start to add washes and weathering?

I've been known to kiss a fish or two, with a little bit of tongue. Don't judge me.

I agree with you, this stuff is really bad as a final clear coat. I tried it once and after it dried it micro-cracked. Ruined my Ford GT40 MK II. Never, never, never again.
