pastel chalks
Posted by nostrdav on Friday, April 22, 2005 6:10 PM
Here we go with another stupid basic question. Where is a good internet source for pastel chalk powders that may come in useful (for modeling) colors such as the dirt, rust, mud, smoke etc colors? Sets?

I am doing my own little diorama of the Death Valley 20 Mule Team Borax Wagons and want to make it look they have traversed about 50 miles of choking alkali dust and Mojave desert dust. Also, any one have ideas on making (plastic molded) wood look somewhat desert sun weathered?

Thanks;
Dave

Dave, here is the link to MMP powders and to Micromark for theirs
http://www.ww2modelmaker.com/mmppigs.htm
http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Department&ID=46
The Micromark page has all types of weathering products for Trains, ships ect. Plus their service is awesome. I use the Docs and like them, though I'm going to get some MMP also after seeing them, they last forever. Have fun!!!

Perfect! Many thanks for taking the time to make a reply.

I am amazed at the interest level that exists out there in making models of these things of historical interest. There is something about dealing with the subject matter and learning what it was all about that is rewarding......

I normally do WWII aircraft because my Dad was a crew chief in WWII on P-38's, and raised me on such matters. I find that historical events in general are such a huge matter in defining who we are.

Anyway; again, many thanks, and anyone that can weigh in on weathered wood.....please do...

And dickblick.com does Internet orders too. They have pastel chalk bars and pencils in all those colors you're looking for.

Dave
I've been very pleased with the results I've gotten using Bragdon's weathering chalks. I had been using their 4 color kit and was so happy with it I recently ordered their 12 color kit from Mark at discountmodels.com.

The chalks apply better than pastels because they're milled much more finely and are blended with a pressure sensitive, dry adhesive. You'll be able to get all the dusty, sooty affects you're looking for in a single step!

Cheers!
