Sanding needs help!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 9, 2005 9:49 AM
I have been reading he FAQS on sanding and I have read Swanny's webpage and understand the materialsI need and somewhat the process. But I had a go at sanding practicinsg on an old BMW Z3 model (been in the box for ages untouched expensive practising considering its Tamiya). Years ago I cut the bonnet of and it looks awful all jagged etc. So Im gluing it back and have applied putty to it. I waited a day and went back and had a short try. Problem is I dont know the procedure to proper puttying and now there are small scratches around the putty on the plastic. How do I fix this and prevent this from happening??

I presume the scratches came from the cutting process? Or were they from sanding after the putty dried? In either case, you need to sand some more to get rid of the scratches. Start with a coarser grain and then go step by step thru the finer grains. It may still look cloudy, but once you prime or paint, it wont' show. If it bothers you before the painting, you can use a product like Novus plastic polish, its a paste that will create a very smooth surface.
