First of all, Welcome to the forum!

The sequence of glueing and painting can differ. As said before, most modellers build the whole model, but leave the small parts off. These can be attached after painting. Normal styreen glue wil not work, because this needs to go directly on the plastic.

In some magazine you see the model painted in subassemblies. Then the parts get glued. This is often necassery for biplanes. There are modellers who do this with other aircraft. This can only be done when building good quality models, with a good fit.

Thanks!!!

I am just starting in model building - getting near retirement and need a hobby that involves reading, research, precision and handwork. Will be retiring from a career as a toolmaker and manufacturing engineer in the defense industries.

Model building seems a natural. I already like the people who are in it. I just wish there was a club near Greensburg, PA.

Again, thanks.

Generally speaking I would glue over the paint using either CA or 5 minute epoxy or white (PVA) glue depending upon the task in hand. An exception to this rule is that after spraying fuselage interiors I will scape or sand the paint off the mating surfaces so as to allow use of one of the welding type plastic cements. I definitely wouldn't try to mask gluing areas for subassemblies when painting the main bulk of the model. You would still end up having to retouch anyway. As qmeister said build as much as you can before painting. Enjoy this wonderful site andSign - Welcome [#welcome]

First of all, welcome to the forum, hope you like it here.

I think most modelers (my self included) try to get as much of the model together as we can before we start painting. But sometimes, the model must be painted before some parts are installed (the upper wings on biplanes, very small parts that must be painted in a different color and/or will be knocked off during the handling of painting etc). I usually paint the larger part and then install the smaller part with CA (Super Glue). Regular styrene glue will destroy the paint and the part will usually not hold but CA will hold as long as you are careful. The down side is that if you are using flat paints, you will have to go in and touch up the glued area because the CA dries glossy and you have to touch it up with flat paint.

Hope this helps a little

I have looked at many how-to articles and can't seem to find and answer to what I guess is a very simple question. Do you mask off all surfaces to be glued after painting or do you glue over paint?

I have seen many pictures with hulls fully painted and later see the hull with parts glued on. Always with no real answer to my question.
