In Australia a lot of older homes use fuse wire type fuses in the fusebox (new term now is meterbox) that controls all the electrical circuits in the house. If there is a power surge (we use 240V current here) the fuse wire burns out preventing circuit damage. It is easy to switch the house power off and replace the burned out fuse wire.
It is a boon to modellers here, being inexpensive (sub AU$2) for a packet with 2 resistance rated spools. I have used it for brakes lines, elec cables in fuselages and various other uses.
