4 piece fuselage question
Posted by wing_nut on Saturday, June 25, 2005 4:50 PM
Back in the 70s there was a Hasegawa 109 G/K kit that had a 4 piece fuselage built several and always did forward first then the tail pieces and joining front and back and never a problem. May have been in part to the distance panel lines on the 109…

Anyway… I am doing a 1/48 Hasegawa p-40N and it has the same king of tail. I assume to make variants of the kits. But this time it did not go together as flawlessly as it did those many years ago. What is the general consensus for technique here? Glue front and back section together for both side to create 2 halves of a full fuselage? Or deal with the fit and get it to work?

I'm just finishing up the Hasegawa P-40E version of the kit. I chose to assemble it per kit instructions. The fit wasn't bad, but I did get a slight step at the join. The join should be filled & sanded smooth in any case, since the join line is not on a panel line that existed on the real Aircraft. Also means you'll likely lose part of the engraved panel lines, but they are easy to rescribe.

While I haven't done either of these kits, I have seen several different models with multi piece fuselage and the usual recommended step is to build each side first, then glue the 2 halves together. This way any required filling will be between the 2 halves and avoid the issue with a stepped fuselage.
