Undercoat before an oil wash
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 28, 2003 8:42 PM
I have always used a gloss undercoat before apply a wash. This time, I am trying something new and doing an artists oil wash. I am using Testor's Model Master enamels for the main color of my M1A1 Abrams.

Question is: Does it HAVE to be a Gloss coat or can it be a dull coat? Is the gloss coat more protective, than say, a matte finish over the main color?

Not just a case of protective ...... the gloss coat allows the wash to flow more freely.

I have used future under the wash coat and it makes it easier to take the excess off. You just have to add another step by adding dullcoat to "matte" the finsih when you're done. I have used oil finishes on flat paint without any adverse effects. The wash seems to respond a little slower to running down seam lines but it seems to work just fine. You will have to spend a little more effort (maybe an extra stroke or two) on clean up.

The difference between gloss and matte is the amount of solids in the solution. The more solids the flatter the finish. Thus in the microscopic level, you are providing more "tooth" for the oil wash to adhere to with flat coat.

Thanks renarts & sherm

Have done lots of washes but not with oils like this. Didn't want to get started and find out about incompatability.

Was just a tad worried about Enamel + Gloss + Oils + Matte

make sure the enamel is dry first erock, otherwise the mineralspirits or thinner you use to clean up the wash may attack the enamel. Once its cured (usualy 24 hours) you should be o.k.

10-4

My basecoat of US Armor Sand has dried for 72 hours. Then last night, I sprayed the gloss coat.

HEY,
Im not sure if this has much to do with your problem but when you mentioned an M1 Abrams, it reminded me of an article in FSM. It is the covor story for June issue. It has a lot of tips on what to do to it. Hope this helps a littl at least.
