Thinning Squadron Puttys
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 12:22 PM
I have squadron green putty and want to use it to fill some gaps and I want to thin it to a better consistancy, what can I use to do that and how much?

Green is toluene based, so toluene would thin it. But it is also very bed for your health. I have used shellac thinner to sand it. I'm not sure if that would thin it. How much? Depends on how thin yuo need.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Haven't done it in a while but I think Testors liquid styrene cement is what I used to thin the stuff. And like Wayne said, Green putty is toxic, so use ample ventilation and a respirator wouldn't be a bad idea.

Squadron Green can be thinned using Acetone or Nail polish remover so that it may be brushed on..

Hi!,

I've thinned Squadron White Putty (same stuff I guess..) sucessfully with acetone. I've used it thin enough to paint into seams and then fine sand after dry. Acetone dries very quickly and breaks down enamels, acrylics and styrene plastic. I use it to clean all my brushes, air brushes, cups, etc. Use gloves, it absorbs into the skin easily..

I use denatured alcohol. I find it works better than nail polish removal. I have never gotten it thin enough to paint on, but I am going to try that technique.

If you thin Sguadron Green putty too much it will crack when dry. I tried thinning it to cover a wing to fusulage seam and after it cured it sunk and cracked. Green putty is best used un-thined. It will still shrink but not as much as when thined

Better yet, use Squadron White. It doesn't shrink as much as Green.

Better still, use Mr Surfacer (for small gaps), CA or two-part auto body putty.
