Pastel products question

Brand is not important of course, and the description of "soft pastels" on the box may not be enough to tell you it is not an oil. Open the package and scrape your fingernail across the pastels. If you get a nice little pile of powdery dust as you scrape... buy'em.

yeah the earth tone set is wonderful... also get the little pack of one black and one white sticks as well (the earthtones doesn't have a white in it) that way you can go for all shades of grey by mixing...

First, welcome to the Forum, hope you enjoy it here.

If the folks who operate your local art store are knowledgeable (and they should be), they should able to tell you which of their products are oil and which are not. Don't be afraid to ask questions (hey - the only dumb question is the one you don't ask). If they can't help you, got to www.MicroMark.com. and go to the painting, decaling and weathering section. They have both the pastel sticks (in earth tones and black/white) and a set of weathering powders. I've used their pastel sticks for years and am very satisfied with them. Hope this helps
