Photo Etched Parts, When to paint?
Posted by JLerch2 on Saturday, July 30, 2005 9:38 AM
I was thinking about getting the eduard detail set for my academy uh-1c frog kit, but im not sure if i would paint the PE parts on their tree or paint after they are on the model, this being the exterior PE set and/or armament. And i will be airbrushing the exterior. Ive never used PE before, but they seem to add uber realism.

I usually prime them on the fret & paint them on the model, but it really depends on the part & where it attaches & how it was painted on the prototype. If painting on the model would require masking, then it's easier to paint them on the fret before attaching.

If the parts are the same color as their surroundings, then I would place and then paint. However, if the parts are a different color than their surroundings, such as seatbelts, I would paint and then place. However, superglue will possiblly fog over the painted parts. But you don't have to use superglue to attach photo etch parts. You can use a white glue, or my favorite, Testors cement for wood and metal. It works great and dries fast. It can get stringy though.
