Usually when I cut off the rudder and elevators I will sand the leading edge flat and glue strip styrene to the front, a little on the big side, and reshape the airfoil so it fits in the grove on the trailing edge of the vertical and horizontal stabs.

What I have done in the past is use seam putty and sand it down and groove it to look like the real thing. Also I have filled the area with balsa wood and grooved it too.

How best to build up the rudder after cutting it?

I've cut the rudder and elevators twice now.  Both times I've finished the accepting groove with lots of sanding and file work; and both times have built up the insterting part of the rudder and elevators with epoxy putty, then sanded them down to fit in the other parts.

It comes out 'ok', but doesn't have that look like it was always that way and couldn't be any other way...if you know what I mean :)

What other build up techniques are there?
