seam/other repair on planes w/ raised details???
Posted by moose1 on Friday, December 2, 2005 1:45 PM
Howdy! I am back into models after 20 years and learning tons of new stuff...Thanks to all of you! This is my first post in the forum and so bear with me...

I was given a box of 1/72 model planes that I am working through and I am trying to fill seams, fix surface imperfections, etc. but many of them have raised panel lines. I know that they are not as cool as recessed lines, but is there any advise for dealing w/ raised panel lines and filling, sanding, etc. across those lines...

Please advise...

Thanks,

Bruce

Howdy and welcome to the forum!  I myself returned to modelling recently and I've learned a bunch through the forum and through the other resources out there.  I was puddying last night thinking about this very topic.  If you haven't yet, check out Swanny's page at www.swannysmodels.com.  He does some awesome work, and puts a lot of builds online which I have found to be an excellent resource.  He has included a section on puddying.  Click the "tools & tips" link, and then on the "seam repair" section (or just go to http://www.swannysmodels.com/Seams.html).  I should have done this last night but I was lazy and now I'll be sanding.  He outlines a method for seam repair that should at least answer that dilemma.  In addition, I know that people will scribe lines (he has a link about this too - http://www.swannysmodels.com/Scribing.html) where raised lines have been erased by sanding.  Good luck and have fun Smile [:)] Jon

Jon:

Thanks for the links! I have been to Swanny's site before and even read his scribing article but I missed that little part about fixing raised panel lines. I would love to shave down one of my planes and scribe all new lines, but for now, I just need to build a few clean machines...

Thanks for the links and encouragement!

I know of someone who's been working on a 1/48 B-17G and has taken up the sanding off & rescribing the panel linesShock [:O] He says it's a long, tedious process!!Banged Head [banghead] I don't think I'd try that tho.
