My personal preference is regular automotive primer in grey.  It's cheap, one can will do several models and if allowed to dry properly prior to application of color coats, almost any paint can be applied over it without any problems.

qmiester: Have you sprayed acrylics over top? The idea of a rattle can for primer really sounds good to me - I won't have to load up (and clean) my airbrush. I use Tamiya acrylics.

Thanks,

You can use Games-Workshop white or black primer they are extremely fast drying like you'll be able to paint within 15mins 30 to be on the safe side after priming and they're good for plastic, metal, resin etc etc Tamiya primer is good too but the Games-Workshop I believe is  $15 CDN and the Tamiya is about $10 for a can 25% smaller so the Games-Workshop for me is more economical.

Thats my My 2 cents [2c]

I hate rattle cans so I use three primers depending on my mood and the surface I'm priming. I mostly use Alclad grey primer since it's airbrush ready. Next in amount of use if Mr. Surfacer 1000 thinned with Mr. Color thinner. Lastly is Dupont 301 automotive primer thinned with industrial lacquer thinner....smallest available size is one quart and only available at professional autobody supply places. The Dupont primer is an acrylic lacquer and I only use it for masters intended for resin casting.
