Working with Eduard PE (or any PE...)
Posted by jcfay on Friday, December 16, 2005 2:44 PM
Hey there - I'm new to PE and I'm beginning work on a 1/48 Hasegawa Hs-129B-3 with Eduard PE and I'm feeling a little lost as how to proceed.  I'm beginning modifications to the stock cockpit parts to fit the miniscule PE and I'm wondering how I should proceed.  Should I assemble all of the cockpit (save the seat, perhaps) with attached PE (except the small levers which I KNOW will get lost if I assemble them this early) and then lay down base colors, wash, detail painting?  I have to lay the Eduard decal behind the Eduard PE cockpit dash after painting, however, so should I just paint the dash first, then lay the detail, then lay the dash on top of it with glue?  I guess I could just use whatever pointers people have out there to working with PE in general, and the general order in which they assemble/paint parts, or vice versa, to attach levers last, or whatever.  Thanks as always! I am by no means a PE expert but have completed a few kits recently using Eduard cockpit and detail sets.  I just did a search of the Eduard site for one for the Hs 129 and did not find one so I don’t know if that means the one you have is just older or out of production.  My first advice is to follow the instruction with the PE set for the order of what to do.  It should tell you what detail need to be removed from the kit to make everything fit.  If is has a complete pit tub…. As with any model I would complete that entirely.  If you wait to put those microscopic levers in after the tub in is the fuselage you may as well forget them as it may just be too difficult at that point.

I am guessing little if any pre-painted details since you mention painting.  Have a look at the link below for a technique to paint the PE panel.  The instrument decal behind or sandwiched, whatever they suggest in the instructions, maybe with a drop of Krystal Klear or Future on the dial faces, after assembly, to simulate glass and it should look real nice.

Thanks Marc - fyi it's catalogue #48312 and still in production it appears; it's not a color set but plain PE.  The advice about the levers, which are so darn microscopic that it's almost ridiculous, is great.  I will attach them prior.  That site had great advice about detailing the instrument panel as well.  I assume I'll attach the sides/base of the cockpit and then spray them, detail/wash them, and then glue the whole thing together with some touchups as needed.  I will spray the instrument panel separately, however, and then detail the edges of the dials prior to sandwiching the decal behind it.  Thanks again Smile [:)] p.s. your next post is 1000 - that's lots o' writing!
