sealing over dry pastels
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 29, 2005 9:06 AM

I was wondering how does one seal over detailing done with dry pastel powders used to simulate smoke stains. Can you cover it with a flat coat or use Future or is there some other technique? I gather that one can more easily seal washes done with wet pastels with a flat coat or with future, right?

Yes you can... it can be sealed with all the things you mentioned.  I use dry pastels all the time and never seal them... they go on last.  Others have seaid that when sealed they tend to lightend quite a bit and sometimes disappear entirely.  It has been suggested to over do it then seal and it should look right.  My thought is... If you over do it and seal it and it does not get lighter... then its over done and sealed.

Polly Scale clear flat thinned 60:40 to 40:60 (depends what you prefer) with 45% isopropyl alcohol, shot from 6-8 inches at 35-45 psi (using a Paasche H, #1 tip) and misted on several very light coats works for me. I have yet to have a pastel be too accented with this method and a few tended to "disappear" a bit but you can give a quick swipe of fresh pastel between coats of flat.
