Cleaning Future
Posted by James Mark on Sunday, February 2, 2003 3:20 PM
I'm going to spray some future through my Paashe airbrush

How do you clean it later...will warm water flushing work?

will Tamiya thinner do the trick (which is basically rubbing alcohol)

I want to avoid buying new products if possible...I'm a poor grad student who has no money!

James, I usually flush my aztec airbrush with rubbing alcohol and that seems to do the trick.

I use alcohol quite soon after I'm done spraying. One time (in band camp) I waited a little too long and the future started to get gummy and it was alot more difficult to get everything clean after that. The alcohol still worked, but not very quickly...

I have use warm soapy water with no problems. Make sure you flush out you airbrush immediately you have finished spraying the future. Tap water on its own should work as long as you flush immediately.

If you let it set up, you will find it very hard to remove. You can try soaking the metal parts of the airbrush briefly in a weak ammonia solution. I say briefly because if the airbrush has brass parts the ammonia will react with and weaken them. This may not be critical for airbrushes in the way it is for ammunition cases, since the pressure is so much less, but why damage an expensive and delicate tool if you can avoid it? Window cleaners with ammonia may help here, since they generally contain detergent and alcohol. As I understand the chemistry, the floor finish is an acrylic polymer whose molecular bonds are degraded by the ammonia, alcohol, etc. Acetone or nail polish remover might also work, but plastic and rubber might need to be protected.-

thank you for the replies :) I of course welcome any other ideas...I'm getting ready to put a clear coat on my plane (So far this is my finest paint job yet...so I don't want to botch things up now!)

Thanks again for the tips

One piece of advice James,
Once you've got the future on, DO NOT CLEAN THE MODEL WITH WINDEX! The windex will eat at the future and you will NOT be happy with the results. Pass this on to anyone else in your house that may 'innocently' dust or wipe something off for you when you're not looking... (my wife doesn't clean my models, but accidently and unknowingly got some overspray on one once. Unfortuantely it left dots and marks on the finish that I still haven't repaired yet. Luckily it's not an award winner and likely will go into the parts-bin).

Like the message above suggests, windex will eat Future. It will also clean an airbrush which had Future sprayed through it. I also use windex to thin my Future, although I rarely thin Future because of its great self leveling properties. Any amonia based product will remove futrue but the sooner you clean your airbrush the easier it is to clean.

I clean Future out of my airbrush with Windex and clean it again with water.
